Not On Vacation #1

I am not on vacation this month, but I’m taking it a little slower. Instead of regular blogging, I’m doing a photo essay based on last year’s trip to a place I go as often as possible: the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park, Colorado.

This black-billed magpie is sitting on the porch at the administration building.

Imagine just to the right, a group of Buddhist monks in brown robes walking past, making much less noise than the magpie. Then, imagine off to the left and forward (where the field is) the Cheyenne East High School marching band practicing for football season.

Last year was the third time I’d gone to the Y during the week that the monks and the band are there at the same time. It’s one of my all-time favorite convergences.

  1. Then again, it’s not hard to make less noise than a magpie. 😉

Buddhist monks, a marching band, and a magpie. How cool is that?! I was there only once, and it was the first and only time I heard the bugling of the elk. Sooooo wonderful.

Oh, I’m gonna love this series. :>) Only you could find such a convergence in the first place – amazing.

  3. Incredible!

I have GOT to get to Estes! I don’t know if I’ve ever heard a magpie. I’ve definitely never heard monks walking by. However, we live two blocks from the high school and I can hear the band practice every morning in the fall.

  4. A marching band and a band of monks. Love it! I like this bit of slowing. I think I might be able to learn a thing or two from you, friend. Summer is whizzing by, an unidentifiable flying timepiece. I’m pulling on the reins, trying to slow. It’s just that everything else keeps going.:)
