Floyd Casey

You said you’ve never seen a rainbow but there was one

at the football game. It appeared before the lightning

when the storm was still off to the south headed straight for us.

It started small and sweet, like the rainbow I swore

I showed you when you were four, the one

that arced off the porch at the mountain house

But this rainbow stretched over the endzone

until it touched the pressbox, grew bolder

while clouds grayed. Stubborn

rainbow. Recalcitrant.

Obdurate enough

to show off its shine while

the rain somehow

skirted the stadium

found other folks to pound
