Why Bother?

Then the word of the LORD Almighty came to me: “Ask all the people of the land and the priests, ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months for the past seventy years, was it really for me that you fasted?

I don’t often start with a verse, but this one caught my eye. When I fast via the Sabbath, am I really doing it for the LORD Almighty? Or is it for me?

Today I seriously thought about skipping. I was rested from a slow weekend in which I participated in a baptism. I’ve prayed daily. Isn’t that good enough?

What about Me?

Ah, yes, the Point. Megan, you’ve missed the Point. Today is not about me. It’s about Jesus. It’s about looking full into His wonderful face.

So, Lord, this one’s for You. My songs are to praise You. The sermon I download is for You to teach me. The rituals I observe are to draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord. Today I don’t feel quite so needy (THANK YOU!), and so I pause to worship.

Borrowing the words from the soon-to-be-released Matt Redman song: “Who, oh Lord could save themselves? Their own soul could heal? Our shame was deeper than the sea. Your grace was deeper still. You alone can rescue. You alone can save. You alone can lift us from the grave. You came down to find us. You led us out of death. To You alone belongs the highest praise.”

Amen. Happy Sabbath.
