Heritage Falls to Faith, 65-52

Yes, this was a headline in our weekly newspaper. Two private schools, one called Heritage School and one called Faith Academy, faced off on the gridiron for a game of 6-man football (hence, the high score).

When I saw the headline, I started thinking about which is winning in my life? Heritage or Faith?

I live in a part of the world (Texas) where Heritage means something. It might be defined by your family or by your country or by which church you attend. We don’t often separate Faith from Heritage.

Eventually, we will all stand before God alone, without vouchers from our grandmothers or the excuses of our culture or the traditions of our churches. It all comes down to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:29).

I’m wrestling with that question, since a huge part of my spiritual Heritage is gone, with the passing of my mom. She was a giant in Faith, the one who led me to Christ and prayed for me through many a turmoil. Without my Heritage, what does my Faith look like?

Faith is slightly ahead, but only by a field goal. It’s not even halftime yet. There’s a lot of game left to play.
