This post is for my husband because this Friday, Baylor University opens its 2011 football season.
The Baylor Bears may not have the best record or the best prospects, but we have a David Crowder song–“Rise Up”–as our football anthem. How cool is that?
Crowder and his wife used to live in Waco, where he served as worship pastor for University Baptist Church (aka UBC). Now they’re in Tennessee. Last year he wrote and recorded “Rise Up” just for the football program.
Of course, I can’t mention Baylor football without also mentioning crying. You really don’t know about trials and tribulations or the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune unless you’re a Baylor football fan.
My husband is a fan.
He is also a fan of the TV show “Parks and Recreation.” Are any of you familiar with Ron Swanson’s Pyramid of Greatness? One of his sayings is “Crying: Acceptable at funerals and the Grand Canyon.” My husband would add “and at Baylor football games.”
He’s not ashamed to admit that he did cry at Baylor’s homecoming last year when they beat Kansas State to become eligible for a bowl for the first time since 1995. While my beloved was tearing up and fans were rushing the field, I saw David Crowder down on the sidelines, congratulating the team, walking around in orange Crocs (Really, David? You couldn’t find some green and gold ones?).
So this Friday night, my husband will wear his “Rise Up” T-shirt. Baylor loves to put obscure Bible verses on T-shirts. This one has a verse from the book of Ezra. Ezra!
