You said you’ve never seen a rainbow but there was one
at the football game. It appeared before the lightning
when the storm was still off to the south headed straight for us.
It started small and sweet, like the rainbow I swore
I showed you when you were four, the one
that arced off the porch at the mountain house
But this rainbow stretched over the endzone
until it touched the pressbox, grew bolder
while clouds grayed. Stubborn
rainbow. Recalcitrant.
Obdurate enough
to show off its shine while
the rain somehow
skirted the stadium
found other folks to pound
