Crows like to steal things, including golf balls. Why not? They’re small and white with hundreds of dimples. If people enjoy them, then crows must get in on the fun. Of course, they do that at the most inopportune times.
Fairway
for Jack, the golfer
I know I made a hole in one.
I saw the ball go in.
But when I came to claim my prize
I felt only chagrin.
I looked to the left, I looked to the right,
I looked across the green.
My buddy pointed and said, “Look up.”
And my heart gave a silent scream.
For there in a nest (that wasn’t his)
sat a crow with his stash displayed.
Not eggs — golf balls (including mine)
was the bounty he claimed to have laid.
