When do you write?
Especially When …
Callie Feyen invited some writer friends to follow a writing prompt. (She has a teacher’s soul.)
Assignment: Write 3-5 sentences telling (showing) when you must write, using “especially when” as the beginning first words. End with a line explaining what writing does.
Of course, I wrote a poem.
Especially When
I must write especially when I discover
a handful of words, like a handful of dried cranberries in my palm,
especially on an early morning in a new place, especially
when thoughts wind by while doing laundry,
especially in the blue quiet of the chapel,
especially now, with this bird on my picnic table.
Then it is real
as real as the flowers on my beautyberry
not yet bloomed but
almost

This morning’s first poem was an Especially When that was a little different. I’d had a dream — one that was crystal clear but made little sense. Right now my penciled poem is an almost. I’ll give it time.
